Statement of Intent and Project Plan
For my final body of work I plan to continue with sculpture, along with incorporate more installation work for the final exhibition. My plan is to continue with the same visual format as my piece from last semester, but I would like to have multiple pieces that are half the size in dimension. I want to have the pieces look like an extension of the environment, so in this case an extension of the gallery space and have the sculptures coming out of the floor/ceiling/walls and towards the viewer. My focus for this body of work is on issue’s women struggle with in today’s society. I would like to focus mainly on aspects that I have dealt with personally but also branch out into other aspects relating to the same theme.
I plan to continue using plaster and plaster bandages to construct my work. My plan for this term is to start working on the pieces a lot further in advance so that I can also mix in paper-mache with plaster materials, in hopes to keep the weight of the piece lighter and to save money in order to finance more pieces for the final exhibition. I’m going to concentrate more on the design of the supporting structures since that was a major problem I faced with the piece I did last semester. My plan is to build a room that fits with my idea and can support my sculptures. Maybe construct my gallery space in one of the sculpture rooms? Since dry wall is out, I was thinking of making wood frames and covering them in paper mâché and constructing the room out of paper mâché walls.
My work from last semester was based around figuring out which material and style for my sculptures, the body form, technique, and overall design. My focus now is developing my concept around feminism, gender and the body, and women’s issues within modern society. The idea for this theme developed when realized a lot of my work had to do with women’s issue’s or aspects pertaining to the female body. I plan to explore issues effecting women such as eating disorders, rape, domestic violence, depression, low self-esteem issues due to body image, and inequalities that women face; linking these to influential aspects in the mass media and popular culture. I’m trying to figure out how many pieces I can get done and have made a rough schedule with dates to have them completed in order to stay organized and to have a series of works to show at the final exhibition.
