Artist Statement
Recently, I have been producing sculptures and installations that deal with concepts involving the female body, as well as issues pertaining to a woman’s experience. Presented in this show are a series of sculptures that I have constructed to reflect upon issues that explore the cruel aspects that women have faced in violent and abusive environments. I address domestic violence, the fragility of family ties and the danger women often face within these relationships. These issues are not typically spoken about openly, since it can be both a painful and an uncomfortable topic for the people involved. These aspects within human conditions happen more often then people realize in our own culture and society.
Through the use of plaster, I have constructed an environment which references a domestic space and where ‘memories’ seep out of the walls and floors of the rooms. The space is constructed in an attempt to visually reveal the life a woman who deals with abuse and violence.
The separating plastered rooms are an important element within the installation so that it may make reference to the home; setting the environment for which the concepts of these structures are developed upon. The plastered rooms and figures are painted white, an important element of this installation. I chose to keep the colour neutral as a way to suggest that these nightmarish memories of the past are still present and are spilling out from this home.
