Statement of Intent and Project Plan
My arts background consists of mainly sculpture and printmaking medias, which comprises of screen-print, intaglio, and relief type prints. In regards to sculpture a recurring theme in previous work of mine is the body; either used or manipulated in way to express my concepts. A few thoughts and ideas that I have previously explored in projects include: illusions, gender identity, consumption, public art and space, and abstract fixtures. With my print art I would describe a lot of my work to date has been more experimental; seeing what can be done through mixing various printing techniques, however a recurring theme in my work has been to tell a story, typically with a romance/fairytale sense, by using characters within the print.
In regards to influential figures I have found the work of three artists to continue to be an influential factor in my own work through their use and presentation of the body. This includes artist Louise Bourgeois and her sculptures based around gender and sexuality, Antony Gormley’s texturized body forms and installations, and Steven Laxton’s photography series, ‘Human and Urban Forms’. Their work has continued to be an influential factor in my own exploration of the body and has helped inspire my own use of the human form.
The type of discipline I plan to pursue for this course is sculptural, along with the possibility of taking an installation approach. Through my experience of both sculpture and printing classes I find myself more interested and comfortable working in 3D art. I’m not completely apposed to taking an interdisciplinary approach to my work, but at the moment I prefer to concentrate on sculpture. In regards to materials I prefer to construct my forms from scratch by using materials such as plaster, paper, or cement; rather then use pre-made objects and have my ideas evolve around the materials. These materials I find most comfortable to work with and find my self continually using because I don’t feel limited in what I can create, and these will most likely be materials I choose to use in the creation of my future projects.
For my upcoming body of work I was thinking of going back to exploring ideas based around sexuality and gender identity. I was only starting to get into the topic when course projects became more public art based and I had to change the subject matter of my work, but I would really like to go back and dig further into the concept. I also really enjoyed doing installation work but due to the nature of previous projects it made it difficult to explore this further. I would also like to stick to the common theme thats continued to play a role in my work and thats the use of the body.
I plan to continue to do research on other installation and sculpture artists in hopes that their work may inspire or help develop my own creation process, along with researching theories and ideas from other individuals that have done work based around sexuality and gender identity. Overall what I would like to accomplish this semester is a successful body of work with a progressive start to the final exhibition along with a successful first semester show. In order to successfully achieve these goals, organization and planning will be a key aspect to my success.
